About Hearing Education Hawke's Bay

We are a charity organisation that has been operating in Hastings for over 50 years, formerly known as Hastings Hearing Association, then Hastings Hearing before changing to Hearing Education Hawke's Bay in 2019.  The organisation was first established to provide free unbiased information, advice and support to anyone affected by Hearing loss in the Hastings District.  We originally provided Hearing Therapy services, hearing assisstive products for sale as well as other hearing related services.  Life Unlimited a Government funded organisation took over the Hearing Therapy Services and this created an opportunity for our organisation to change direction and focus more on hearing loss prevention.

Our organisation noticed that there was a lack of education in the community relating to the prevention of noise induced hearing loss.  As 'noise exposure' is suggested to be the most common cause of hearing loss in New Zealand, we felt it was vital that a program be designed & provided FREE to our community to educate people and raise awareness on Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) and how to prevent this invisible disability.  Therefore in 2012 a Hearing Educator was employed to develop the program based on the internationally accredited Dangerous Decibels Program and was tasked with the job of delivering it to as many people in our community as possible.  The presentations are fun, interactive and adapted to deliver information that is relevant to the participants & in a way that is easily understood.  They are presented FREE to Early Childcare Education Centres, Kindergartens, Schools, Tertiary Education Centres and Community Groups.  Click here for more on our Education program

OUR MISSION:  To educate our community that noise induced hearing loss is 100% preventable and provide   people with the knowledge they need to protect their hearing.

We are an association consisting of approximately 120 members.  Anyone can become a member of our association, simply by making an annual donation of $25 or more to our Give A Little account.  Those that support our program with an annual donation of $25 or more automatically become a 'Hear-o' / member of our Association and not only get the satisfaction of knowing they are helping protect the hearing of our future generations but are also entitled to discounted hearing aid batteries if purchased through Age Concern Hastings.

Members of Hearing Education Hawke's Bay can purchase a packet of 6 batteries for just $5 from our local partner and also receive their 11th pack free.

We are not-for-profit and do not receive funding from the government,

therefore we rely on donations, grants, membership subscriptions,

fundraising & bequests to fund our organisation.
